La tana del lupo, 2001, wood box with inkjet print on paper and glass

Places of memory
by Antonella Crippa

Armida Gandini’s Places of memory take the form of slim wooden boxes filled with different layers of glass, printed acetate, and photographic paper. The order in which these transparent sheets are placed is by no mean random and seeks to echo the process by which memories are evoked. In an attempt to explore identity through memory, Gandini represents the three stages, which that she considers part of this process – the real experience, the memory of the experience, and the key to its interpretation-with three layers of images.

Placed close together, one on top of the other, like rock strata in a geological excavation, the three levels are presented as being essential to one another in order to create a single image. At the deepest level lies the confused memory of one’s past, represented by out-of-focus photographs of woods, trees, and leaves that have been printed on translucent paper. In the artist’s most recent series of works, this “fairytale wood” has been drawn, scanned, and printed using a plotter.

The next level is that of the specific memory, symbolized by further out-of-focus images, this time of the artist as a child, which have been reproduced on acetate and inserted between sheets of glass. A carefully calculated distance between the two layers allows the shadowy forms of the figures depicted on the acetates to fall onto the photographed scenes of the woods. The top level depicts the fairytale, which Gandini includes as a key to interpreting her work; the parable contained within this level allows the private, personal memory to become general and, released from its strictly autobiographical formula, applicable to all.
Gandini seeks to reassure the observer that her adventures have a positive outcome. The little girl in Passeggiata nel Bosco (A Walk in the Woods) has traveled a long way and passed through many dangerous situations, but she has arrived safely home, enriched by her many experiences. The wolf, the wicked witch, the cat and the fox, Cinderella’s ugly sisters – we are all running from the shadow of evil; we are no different to Gandini and the stories she uses become paradigms for our lives.
